Most students meet science as a set of results other people already found. They follow a procedure, get the expected answer, and write it up. That is a demonstration, and it teaches almost nothing about how discovery actually feels.

Original research feels different. You design the comparison, you run it more times than you want to, and the answer is not in the back of the book. Students who get to do that once tend to remember it.

The equipment that makes it possible is often inexpensive. It is just not in the budget, and there is rarely a line item to put it in. That is a solvable problem, and it is the one we work on.
